War

We’re getting so good at these circles we run,
Back to the beginning again.
I never thought that I’d be the one
To send you away, my friend.
Keep marching onward, don’t look back,
Nothing can help you there in the past
All you can do is try not to react
And maybe you won’t finish last.
All I ever needed was you to stand by me
All I ever wanted was you to let me be.
Dig out your foxhole light a match
Hunker down for the night,
That heart in your chest is in need of a patch
Barely giving you life.
All I ever needed was you to stand by me
All I ever wanted was you to let me be.
Wind up your rows of toy soldiers, now,
Send them off to the war
Here is the only way that we know how to
Find out what we’re living for.
All I ever needed was you to stand by me
All I ever wanted was you to let me be.

The sun has long since gone to bed,
And I, too, long to rest my head,
But I've still 50 miles to drive.
My days have spent wandering
To where I am from where I've been.
I guess that's what it means to be alive.
By now, you should've learned.
Hearts have broken, bridges burned.
Don't use words unless you know their meaning.
Supreme powers of audition,
Many unheard conversations,
Don't use words unless you know their meaning.
The charismatic charlatan
Won't give up until he's won.
I fell dazed at his feet.
Fog thins eventually,
Blood-shot eyes start to see,
But there's no point in standing when you're beat.
By now, you should've learned.
Hearts have broken, bridges burned.
Don't use words unless you know their meaning.
Supreme powers of audition,
Many unheard conversations,
Don't use words unless you know their meaning.
You should check your depth perception;
You didn't catch me.

Water & Clay

Appreciate, for a moment, the mast'ry of this wall.
From the outside I look welcoming while sharing nothing at all.
To you, it may look sturdy, but it's cracking, and it shakes.
Every time the wind blows, there's so much at stake.
If one brick goes, the rest are sure to follow.
I thought I knew what I was made of, but I very well may be hollow,
And if I'm buried in rubble, will I remember who I am?
If you see me in shambles, will you still know where I stand?
Yes, the nights can be lonely when you're sleeping curled up next to stone,
But you never have to worry who will betray you if you're on your own.
I hear the world is a'changing; it's a rather large place,
But I've been a bit preoccupied, washing the blood off my face.
If one brick goes, the rest are sure to follow.
I thought I knew what I was made of, but I very well may be hollow,
And if I'm buried in rubble, will I remember who I am?
If you see me in shambles, will you still know where I stand?
I started digging tunnels so that I could get out at night,
And I thought that they were hidden until I saw the first beam of light.
Now the fissures are opening, the boundaries are wearing away,
What I thought was a fortress is only water and clay.

Silver Moon

Oh, silver moon,
Won't you tell me what to do?
Oh, night of stars,
Won't you tell us what we are?
Try as I might, I can't seem to find you here.
Sometimes I think we were born to disappear.
Oh, sea of grey,
Won't you wash my thoughts away?
Oh, lighthouse beam,
Makes things better than they seem.
Try as I might, I can't seem to find you here.
Sometimes I think we were made to live in fear.
Oh, birds of song,
Won't you take my heart along?
It's grown heavy
And I need the space to breathe.
Try as I might, I can't seem to find you here.
Sometimes I think we should be anywhere but here.

731 days
Since I last sung and you played.
Effortlessly, you knew
Every line my voice drew,
Sensing when to run or stay.
What did I do?
To bring this out in you?
Nothing special in my face.
Every word scratched thin to erase.
You saw magic somewhere,
Loved me with my soul bare,
Built our hopes on pins and grace.
What did I do?
To bring this out in you?
You confess abuse and love.
Tell me, what's the use of doves
After you've clipped their wings,
Empty notes and empty rings.
You still confuse what's above.
What did I do?
To bring this out in you?
Where'd you leave your heart?
How'd this even start?
